I'm not sure you understand what a commuter train is. I've been poked once, and it was because I was in a very very deep sleep. Conductors poking passengers? I ride Caltrain five days a week to and from work. Granted, after that, until the evening commute, it goes down to about one an hour, but that's because Caltrain is a commuter train.Įlectrification is coming-it's already planned. Five trains in the 7am hour, five trains in the 8am hour. There are four trains in the 6am hour, one of which is the baby bullet, and the other three are express, so they all skip at least one stop. Since you mentioned SF to SJ, I'll use that as an example. I've never wondered why Caltrain runs once an hour, because that's not true. If you're interested in hundreds of similar planning maps, I'd recommend checking out Eric Fischer's photostream on Flickr, where he collects all sorts of similar documents about the Bay Area. 1962 map showing the first and possible future stages of BART with 'possible future connections' as far out as Livermore, Antioch, San Jose, and Novato.A map updated with the Marin line removed from September 1961 and showing the MUNI Rail connections.A similar map, San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District General Map, JRoutes, with an alternate routing through the Mission. Here is the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District General Map, February 9, 1961, which shows in detail the planned routes. This is the map that most clearly shows off the planned routes at that time. Here's a 1961 map showing the proposed Travel Times between different stops. Here are the original planning documents: There's been many reposts of a modern-looking map claiming to be 'the original BART plan' which looks very pretty, but isn't the original planning documents.
